LABATON
Vivien Labaton
is director of the Third
Wave Foundation, the only national organization for young women
between the ages of 15 and 30. She is the founding staff person
of the organization, which has a membership of over 5,000 young
women across the country. During her tenure, Third Wave has grown
from a fledgling organization to one that is increasingly recognized
as the voice of young womens needs. In the past three years,
Third Wave has implemented a Leadership Training Initiative for
young women and men; disbursed over $200,000 in grants to young
women nationally in the areas of reproductive rights, economic empowerment,
organizing and advocacy, and higher education; and has conducted
public education campaigns on a range of issues, including social
security, voter registration, philanthropic education, and womens
health. Ms. Labaton has spoken publicly on issues ranging from social
security to reproductive rights to philanthropy, and has been featured
on CNNs Inside Politics, Oxygens Trackers
and Pure Oxygen, PBSs To The Contrary, and the
Washington Posts Her Time online. Her writing has appeared
in Ms. Magazine, online at Feminist.Com,
and has been anthologized in For Women Only and the
forthcoming Feminist Visions. For the past four years, Vivien
has also worked as a research associate to Gloria Steinem. She currently
serves on the Board of Directors of The Womens
Funding Network and the Advisory Board of Girlsource.
