GALE
BREWER
Gale A. Brewer
is the project manager for the New York City Nonprofits Project,
a two-and-a-half-year census of the economic and service impact
of the nonprofit sector in the five boroughs. The results, which
will include a citywide analysis and a nonprofit Service Atlas,
will be available in directories, CD-ROM, and an interactive web
site.
Previously,
Gale Brewer was a Project Coordinator for the Telesis Corporation,
a Washington-based private firm that builds affordable housing and
plans for quality communities. Telesis has a contract with the New
York City Housing Authority to manage a $67 million HUD grant in
Far Rockaway, Queens. Gale Brewer focused on housing marketing surveys
and initiating service programs for residents of the developments.
She was successful in securing a $2.7 million federal grant for
improving schools and the surrounding community.
From 1994-1998,
Gale Brewer was Deputy Advocate for Intergovernmental Affairs. The
Public Advocate presides over the City Council, monitors service
delivery, and provides ombudsman service. She advocated for legislation,
wrote policy on government technology, and monitored democracy issues
such as implementation of the National Voter Registration Act. She
coordinated a survey of NVRA and wrote a report on the lack of implementation
that was the basis of a federal lawsuit against the state and the
city. She staffed the Commission on Public Information and Communication
and sat on the Voter Assistance Commission and the Community Action
Board of the Department of Youth and Community Development. Her
web site was the first in city government and won an award form
New York Magazine.
From 1990-1994,
Gale Brewer was Director of the Mayors Federal Office in New
York City. It assists agencies with their legislative agenda and
is a liaison with the NYC Washington, DC office. She initiated private
funding for a technical assistance program for community-based organizations
seeking federal funds. She coordinated policy events, such as the
Urban Summit, a conference of big city mayors; the 1992 March on
Washington for Children and Cities; and the 1993 US Conference of
Mayors held in New York City with 1000 mayors. She wrote the Mayors
presentation on urban issues for President Clinton and his cabinet.
From 1991-1992, Ms. Brewer was also Acting Director of the NYC Commission
on the Status of Women, and she served from 1986-1989 as Chair of
the National Womens Political Caucus of New York State, an
organization known as the political arm of the womens movement.
Gale Brewer
has taught at Hunter, Brooklyn, Baruch, Barnard, and Queens Colleges.
Before taking a year off to obtain a Masters degree in Public
Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard
University, she served for over a decade as Chief of Staff to NYC
Council Member Ruth Messinger. Ms. Brewer did her undergraduate
work at Columbia University.
Ms. Brewer
has received numerous awards, including one of the Womens
History Month Honorees in 2000, courtesy of NYC Comptroller Alan
Hevesi, and NOWs Susan B. Anthony award. She was honored by
Brooklyn Council members Una Clarke and Annette Robinson, and in
1993, by Asian Americans for Equality. Newsday and the
Village Voice have written tributes about her work. She serves
on Community Board 7 in Manhattan, and on many nonprofit boards.
