JUDSON
MEMORIAL CHURCH

As
a free social space, Judson tries to help people connect
the dots between the personal and the political. Experimental art
and political activism are main components of the Judson legacy.
Historically the church has been identified with rights-based liberalism:
free expression, gay liberation, reproductive freedom, etc. More
recently, Senior Minister Peter Laarman has made market determinism
and the new corporate agenda a principal focus for discussion and
action, with particular emphasis on the downgrading of work and
working conditions. Since 1997 the church has co-sponsored the Workfare
Campaign of Resistance in an effort to mobilize faith-based communities
against the Giuliani Administration's abusive WEP program. The church
also hosts The Employment Project, a "safe space" resource
for downsized and discouraged workers.
