Good
Jobs New York

Good Jobs
New York was created to promote taxpayer accountability in economic
development practices, particularly expensive subsidy deals with
large corporations that threaten to leave New York City. Since 1994,
over $2 Billion in subsidies have been given to NYC companies in
the name of “job retention.” This practice reached a
new low in December 1998 when the city and state promised the New
York Stock Exchange a package worth $900 million – and the
cost has since ballooned, reaching almost $1.1 billion in September
2000.GJNY examines these deals with a critical eye to promote the
principles that the public has the right to know the details of
these deals, to have input on them through their elected representatives
and to be assured that, at a minimum these deals actually create
new, good jobs for New Yorkers. States and cities around the country
have implemented accountability measures that ensure taxpayers get
a good “bang for their buck” when governments grant
subsidies to companies. It’s time for New York to do the same.
