THE
DRUM MAJOR INSTITUTE
The Drum Major
Institute was re-formed in early 2002, with the intentions of resuming
the work of the Civil Rights Movement. Deriving direct support
and inspiration from the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Harry
Wachtel, DMI holds that for reform to occur in the local, state,
and national social climate, change must occur in the political
climate. These changes require active democratic engagement,
reform of public and private educational, and a reconsideration
of the American criminal justice system. As these institutions
are the fundaments of political activity, they can only be responsible
to the "public will" when the public is engaged, active,
and most importantly, participating in the workings of these systems.
The Drum Major Institute focuses largely upon issues dealing with
minorities, although these issues transcend all social boundaries.
